Family Violence Youth Site from the Department of Justice Canada


This is an excellent resource that will help kids to understand the issue of family violence. The site defines family violence and provides specific practical examples of it. It also contains links to information about support services such as helplines, useful internet sites etc.. A discussion of what constitutes a criminal offense and what does not is also covered. Several pages deal with the physical and emotional pain that family violence causes. Because this website is created by the Government of Canada, it is very reputable and the information on it is accurate and reliable.

This is a good website that contains information for kids about what to do in case they or a friend are being abused. This webpage offers great suggestions about how to get over the emotional pain of abuse such as keeping a diary or spending time with friends. It also has a mythbuster sheet that kids can use to inform themselves about some of the common myths about abuse in the family. Another great feature of the Kids' Help Phone website is of course the ways in which kids can receive help when they need someone to talk to, whether it be calling the helpline, or sending them an email.

This is a video that sensitively deals with a very delicate subject. It portrays a girl who has some bruising and is later forced to pretend that she is sleeping in order to escape interacting with her abuser, who is presumably a member of her family. It does not show anything graphic, but makes the point subtly. There is also some text at the beginning of the video that deals with the definition of child abuse and its prevalence.

bully_icon.gifThis is a wonderful site that aims to introduce students to bullying by covering what it is, the characteristics of the bully, bystander and the victim. Suggestions about how to cope with bullying and how to transform your school into a bully-proof zone are also provided. The hot topic of cyberbullying is also covered with tips about what to do if you being bullied through the use of technology. If all this wasn't enough, there is even a game where you race against an inter-galactic bully. You can win the game if you answer some questions about bullying correctly. There is also a component of the game where you can just play with your up and down arrow keys, but it's nice to see that the game truly does do something constructive such as testing students' knowledge about bullying.
"Your life" section of BAM! website

This is a great website that touches on almost all aspects of students' social lives. Topics such as peer pressure, bullying and smoking, are covered in a very educatonal, kid-friendly manner. Each of these topics has an interactive game that students can play that will strengthen their knowledge of that particular issue. Another aspect of this website that I really like is that it features a section that is devoted to a critical analysis of the magazines and other media that are directed towards pre-teens. Many of these media promote self-destructive activity such as smoking and drinking, either explicitly or implicitly. It is comforting to know that there are sites out there like this one that are training children to scrutinize the messages that they are constantly being bombarded with by the media on a daily basis. This site is a veritable cornucopia of kid-appropriate information about a myriad of topics such as peer pressure,substance abuse, stealing etc. The term "peer pressure" is clearly defined, and I really like how this article mentions that there are two types of peer pressure-positive and negative peer pressure. Positive peer pressure is a good thing and is something that all students should strive for, as this simply entails encouraging peers to make good decisions rather than bad ones. This website can be left up to students to explore on their own time or it would serve as a great basis for a research paper.

Xtranormal YouTube video about self-regulation of anger

This is a short video that cuts right to the heart of anger managment. It features two animated teens talking about "the anger rules". These are to never hurt yourself, others or property when you get angry. The video also touches on why it is a good idea to walk away from situations in which we find ourselves getting angrier by the minute. This video is sure to grab students' attention and is quite packed with useful information, considering that it is only around 1.5 minutes long.

Article about handling stress by Kids' Health

This is a great article about how to manage stress. The article lists the main things that kids have reported worrying about. It then lists different ways to deal with stress such as exercising, doing an enjoyable activity etc. It also examines why certain activities such as eating are not a good way to deal with stress. In addition to this,this article stresses the importance of students telling their parents or another trusted adult about their stress if they are feeling overwhelmed.

This is an excellent article about anger management. This article makes it very clear that feeling angry is okay, as long as you don't hurt yourself, someone else or property around you. It also emphasizes the importance of talking to someone about your anger if it becomes too difficult to bear alone. The use of "I" statements such as "I felt very hurt when you kicked me", are suggested as good ways to communicate your anger versus using "you" a lot, which only makes people defensive.

Healthy Eating Games from PBS Kids

This site contains links to lots of fun, interactive games involving healthy eating. In one game, sharacters from the Sesame Street explain how to choose vegetables and fruits of different colours. In another game, characters from the TV show Arthur help to create balanced meals, along with explaining the function of different nutrients.

This site is a one stop website for kids who want to learn how to eat and live in a healthy manner. There are many healthy recipes that kids can easily make on their own. There are also fun fitness games in which kids can do fitness challenges such as hopping on one foot for 10 seconds, right at their computer. I can definitely see myself recommending this website to my students as a good resource to use when they are looking for additional ways to be healthy.
